Moving into student accommodation for the first time is one of the most exciting, and slightly nerve-wracking moments of your university journey. Whether you're coming from across the country or just down the road, a little preparation goes a long way.

At Leicester One, we've helped hundreds of students settle in, and we've put together this guide to make sure your move-in day goes as smoothly as possible.

Before Move-In Day

Start thinking about move-in at least two weeks before the date. There are a few key things to sort out early:

  • Confirm your move-in time slot with the accommodation team

  • Arrange transport, a van hire or family car works best for the first load

  • Download any required apps or forms from your university portal

  • Sort your bank account and student finance if you haven't already

What to Pack

This is where most students either over-pack or forget the essentials. Here's a quick breakdown:

Bedding & Bedroom

  • Duvet, pillowcases and fitted sheets (check bed size first, usually UK single)

  • Towels (at least two)

  • Desk lamp and extension lead

  • Hangers and storage boxes

Kitchen Essentials

  • Plates, bowls, mugs and cutlery

  • A few basic pans and a chopping board

  • Tin opener, bottle opener, peeler

  • Washing-up liquid and a cloth

Move-In Day: Step by Step

When you arrive, take your time and don't rush. Here's what to expect:

  1. Check in at reception: bring your booking confirmation and ID

  2. Collect your keys and welcome pack

  3. Inspect your room: note any existing damage on the check-in form

  4. Unload and set up: do this before exploring

  5. Introduce yourself to flatmates: your best mates might be right next door

Settling In: Your First Week

The first week can feel overwhelming, freshers events, induction sessions, and navigating a new city. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Say yes to social events, even if you're tired, you won't regret it

  • Find the nearest supermarket (Aldi on Granby Street is a Leicester One favourite)

  • Set up a weekly cleaning rota with flatmates early, it prevents arguments later

  • Use the common areas at Leicester One to meet other residents

Moving to university is the start of something brilliant. The nerves you feel now will be forgotten by the end of week one. Good luck, and we'll see you at Leicester One.
